Places to see Main keep: A structure built as part of the castle or on its site to fend off enemies

Azuchi Castle was built in 1576 by Nobunaga Oda and had the first full-scale main keep in Japan. The castle was later destroyed in a fire and only the stone foundation walls remain (designated a special historic monument). Close to the ruins is the House of Nobunaga, the Chief Lord of Azuchi Castle, an exact full-scale replica of the fifth and sixth stories of the castle's main keep. Other materials can be found at the Museum of the Azuchi Castle Quarter and the Shiga Prefectural Museum of Azuchi-Castle, Archaeology.
