Otsu Sakamoto flourished as the location of a town lodge for the monks of Enryakuji, Mt. Hiei. The town is famous for its stone foundation walls, skillfully built during the Warring States Period (1467-1568).
The head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, with a spacious temple castle on Mt. Hiei. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
